The following steps will show you how to easily use the DivX Converter to create DivX movies from existing QuickTime movies.
Step 1: Launch DivX Converter by double-clicking its icon in the Finder. Once launched, and past the welcome window, the DivX Converter main window will open.
Additionally, the DivX Converter icon shows up in your Macintosh's Dock when running, but will automatically be removed from the Dock once the DivX Converter is closed.
If you want the ability to easily and immediately launch the DivX Converter, simply click and hold on its icon in the Dock. A menu will appear. You can then choose 'Keep in Dock' from the menu and the DivX Converter's icon will always be easily accessible within the Dock.
Step 2: Drag and drop one or more QuickTime movies onto the DivX Converter. You can convert files files ending in one of the following extensions: '.mov', '.mpg', '.mpeg', '.mp4', '.avi' and '.divx.'
Once you've dragged over one or more movies, the DivX Converter shows that the movies are queued up for conversion.
Step 3: If you wish to view the list of movies in the queue, click on the 'View List' button. Additionally, you can use the 'View List' screen to remove or add movies without dragging and dropping.
To remove a movie from the queue, click on the title within the list and click the 'Remove' button.
To add movies here, simply click the 'Add...' button.
To close the 'View List' screen, click the 'Close' button in the view or click the 'View List' button again on the DivX Converter.
Step 4: Click the left or right arrow buttons to choose a DivX conversion profile. Profiles are predefined "templates" that specify the dimensions, video bitrate and other conversion settings that are appropriate for various playback devices.
There are four standard profiles including 'Handheld,' 'Portable,' 'Home Theater,' 'High Def' and a special profile titled 'Custom.'
The 'Handheld' setting is suitable for creating DivX movies for playback on handheld devices. The 'Portable' profile is best for playback on larger, portable devices. Use the 'Home Theater' profile for playback on standard DVD players. Finally, the 'High Def' setting should be used for playback on high definition devices.
The 'Custom' profile isn't a profile in and of itself. Instead, choosing 'Custom' instructs the DivX Converter to present you with a user interface when converting that allows you to choose one of the standard profiles in addition to the ability to fully configure the conversion process.
If you've selected 'Custom,' you'll first choose your desired profile from the pop-up menu. Then, select one of the radio buttons to make either a high quality file, a file of a specific size (say, to fit nicely on a CD-ROM) or to access the Advanced Settings where you can resize, crop, remove black edges, change the video and audio bitrates, adjust quality and much more.
Step 5: Click the 'Convert' button to begin the process of creating DivX movies from the QuickTime movies in the queue.
At this point the DivX Converter sequentially processes each QuickTime movie, creating a new DivX movie that matches the profile or custom settings you specified. As the DivX Converter does its work, it cycles between indicating the progress of all movies in the queue as well as the progress of each individual movie.
When it has finished converting all the movies in the queue, the DivX Converter will display the following window:
If the DivX Converter encountered any errors during the conversion process, they will be indicated in the window shown above as well.
To dismiss the window without any further action, press the 'OK' button. The window will close and you'll return to the DivX Converter main window.
If you wish to have the newly created DivX movie(s) displayed to you in the Finder, click the 'Show' button. This will cause the Finder to open the DivX Movies folder, revealing the newly created DivX movies. This will also close the window and bring you back to the DivX Converter main window.
At this point, the DivX Converter queue is now empty and ready for you to drag and drop more movies on it to repeat the conversion process. If you're done converting movies, simply click the 'X' button in the top right of the window to quit DivX Converter (or choose 'Quit' from the DivX Converter menu in the menu bar).
