Genuine DivX and Diagnosing Playback Problems

When diagnosing some problems it is useful to determine:
  • that the file you are attempting to play does actually contain DivX video. Files on peer-to-peer networks, such as Kazaa, Grokster etc. often contain the term "DivX" in their filenames despite being encoded in another format.
  • that the geniune DivX decoder filter is being used to decode DivX videos. Sometimes other decoder filters will commandeer decoding of DivX content from the genuine DivX decoder filter.
  • whether or not any other filters are affecting the rendering process.
The following steps are involved in this investigation:
  1. Download GSpot from Headbands (for Windows2K/XP, download GSpot v2.52 beta1) and use it to open the DivX AVI file. Verify that under Video Format the Codec 4CC is one of:
    • DIVX
    • DIV6
    • DX50
    • DIV4
    • DIV3
    • DVX1
If the Codec 4CC is not one of these codes then the file does not contain genuine DivX video.

In the Proposed Codec Solutions and Tests Section Under MS A/V click the  #1 button. The Video Path field should contain:

DivX Decoder Filter
If the Video Path field does not contain this text then the genuine DivX decoder filter is not being used by the system to decode DivX video.

The simplest Video Path is:
(S) --> AVI Splitter --> DivX Decoder Filter -->(R)

If the Video Path displayed differs from this then other filters may be affecting your DivX playback. You should include this information when requesting support with playback problems.

Click on the #2 Button, The video will play if everything is normal.  If the video doesnt play, please send a screenshot of the GSPOT window with your technical assistance request.
